Harley died
62-year-old Harley died in a fire in a Berwick bus shelter early yesterday morning. He was a well-known figure in the town since his arrival and is described as being always friendly.
There are several possible explanations for this tragedy. First thing in everyone's mind is that someone might have intentionally hurt him, what would have been tragic indeed.
Another explanation would be that he was “ust” freezing, tried to warm himself up to stay alive - and accidentally set himself on fire. Obviously he was homeless, and the reasons for that might reach from lack of help for mental stability to plain poverty.
Even thought most people think the foul play version is the bad one I think the accident version is the worse because it shows the severity of the challenges uncounted numbers of humans face every day and that are ignored by big parts of society.
It might even be a completely different explanation for Harley’s death. And whatever the explanation might be - his death was probably preventable by society. There are many freezing people left alone in the cold. Wake up, society, take responsibility!
Read more about Harley’s death in the Chronicle Herald.

Found this in front of the supermarket,...
... probably as decoration. But seriously, I could so much see myself driving in one of these to the grocery! Not sure though what to put in front of it – a pony or two, a steer, a friendly moose?
I wonder if something like this would still be possible somewhere here in Nova Scotia or any other place?

Maybe you noticed by now that I'm very eager to learn about Canadian wildlife.
So whenever I see someone apparently knowing I jump at them (usually gently I hope) and try to learn as much as possible.
This time we met a very friendly family from the neighbourhood that taught us enthusiastically to identify – fanfare – huckleberries! As far as I know you can't buy huckleberries in the grocery and there isn't even a German wikipedia entry about huckleberries. So they don't seem to be very popular and I have no idea why because they taste very, very delicious...! And they are even kind fellows - they don't have prickles, so you don't look like having had a bad fight with a bunch of mad cats as I sometimes do after picking blackberries...

Since I rarely lick trees...
...when I am in the woods I had no idea what to expect taste-wise when I tried to make pine needle tea for the first time. But since Eastern white pine needles contain five times the amount of Vitamin C by weight of lemons (who would have thought that...?!) it seemed to be a good idea to give it a try. And surprisingly it tastes really awesome! And it smells even better! My new favourite tea!

Sun-day as Sundays should be...
After bringing lots of pictures to a gallery we were riding the ferry back and forth three times because I love the ferry so much and deserved a maritime reward. And then we went to to a historic walk through historic Dartmouth. Even if our tour guide was very kind and knowing and even if we got some information material I have to admit that I didn't listen too well. I was too busy trying to hold my handouts between an adorable black and very warm dog and the sun. Probably that looked kind of eccentric for the unknowing viewer - but my new furry friend seemed to appreciate the shady use of my informative literature...

Finally someone on our hero list again... Antoinette Tuff!
Guns kill ā€“ words can, too, in some ways. But words can heal as well, and guns can't. I'd love to see well minded and well educated people like Antoinette Tuff in each school! She definitely has my highest respect!
ā€If Americaā€s National Rifle Association had its way, US schools would prepare for the terrible eventuality of a mass shooting by arming their own staff with guns. But when a young man with mental health problems entered the Ronald E McNair Discovery Learning Academy in Decatur, Georgia this week, brandishing an AK-47, the massacre he planned was prevented not by more firearms, but by the calming words of an unarmed school bookkeeper.ā€¯ The Independent

I've been fascinated by the “tiny house movement” for quite a while now.
“Tiny houses” are about 2,5 meters wide and usually 6 meters long, are comfy, environmentally friendly, simplify your life, are movable and moreover overall awesome! At night I lay awake thinking about great designs, space saving and usable stair-systems, how to use the tiniest spot for storage which even looks lovely - and how to add more cosiness and comfort... I even built models of tiny houses - diving deep into my CG architecture knowledge... It's amazing how much space you can create in very little room. I love working on projects like this, challenges, inventing things! This picture is from last summer and the sticks and stones mark the dimensions and some interior. It felt much larger than it looks... really! And I had tons of new ideas since then...!

Today is World Day Against Child Labour
“Hundreds of millions of girls and boys throughout the world are engaged in work that deprives them of adequate education, health, leisure and basic freedoms, violating their rights. Of these children, more than half are exposed to the worst forms of child labour such as work in hazardous environments, slavery, or other forms of forced labour, illicit activities such as drug trafficking and prostitution, as well as involvement in armed conflict.
The International Labour Organization (ILO) launched the first World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 as a way to highlight the plight of these children.” International Labour Organization (ILO)

“I so would like to see a big animal”...
...Andreas said – and I delivered right away.
We went for a walk in Shubie Park last night. And in the light of my beloved Dynamo Flashlight I spotted two big eyes about 12 meters right in front of us. Because it was so dark I couldn't figure out who the proud owner of the big eyes would be. “Hey, there's a cat!” I thought.
Then the eyes started to move upwards.
When they reaches a height of about 1.3 meters I felt “a bit uncomfortable” realizing that this was not a cuddly kitten standing between me and civilisation. It did not really help that making loud sound like clapping hands just made the mysterious eye owner come closer. I tried to take a picture thinking the light would make it go away or at least give us a clue what it was. But it was obviously not camera shy but came even closer. Did someone from the nearby Shubie Wildlife Park take a stroll? A bears, wolf, bobcat, elk... T-Rex? And why the #%&* is it coming closer? Do I look tasty tonight? Did he invite hungry friends for dinner? Well, when the bloodthirsty zombie-monster was close enough to see it better it turned out to be a – tadah – very sociable deer. A huge one, didn't know they come in this size! I was seriously impressed!

Lumberjack... me...?
Need to saw some pieces of background wood for some art projects and went to my second favourite hardware store. Asked a very cute gentleman shop assistant who looked like out-of-season Santa Claus where to find a hand saw and he asked me with an adorable smile if I would need it for lumber work or to cut down trees... I loved that he seriously assumed tiny me would be able to cut down big trees with a hand saw! The pictures popping up in my head of that process are pretty hilarious – maybe I should try it some day!

The UN General Assembly approved a global arms trade treaty today
“The United Nations General Assembly has approved a global arms trade treaty ... which garnered the support of a majority of Member States when put to a vote today. ... Speaking ahead of the vote, the President of the General Assembly, Vuk Jeremic, called the text “groundbreaking” as well as “robust and actionable”. ... The text draws a link with the presence of weapons across the developing world, especially in conflict-affected areas, with the challenge of sustainable development and safeguarding human rights, added Mr. Jeremic.” UN News Centre

Who would lick a beaver's behind to find that out in the first place...?!
I love raspberry yogurts and eat them almost daily - and here's another new reason why I just mix frozen raspberries with plain yoghurt: Castoreum. I just read that Castoreum is extracted from beaver's anal glands and is used to make artificial raspberry, strawberry and vanilla flavouring. It's found in ice cream, Jell-O, candy, fruit flavoured drinks, teas and yogurts. Oh and it's used in cigarettes, perfume and snaps, too. They call it "natural flavouring" in the products' lists of ingredients.
Who knew that it is challenging not to consume beaver's behinds.

The world's combined solar power capacity reaches record 101 gigawatts!
30 GW was added to the world grid in 2012 alone. Now world's combined solar power generates as much electricity energy in a year as sixteen coal power plants or one nuclear reactor. Good start, world!

We went for a 3 hour blizzard walk yesterday.
If I could choose between the everyday crazy traffic and yesterday's street conditions here with very few cars on the street, working public transportation, smiling people skiing and snowshoeing in the middle of main streets, people excitedly playing with their children in front yards - I would choose this blizzard any time!
Almost everyone we met seemed to be joyful, children learned to ice skate on walkways, an ambitions snow shoveller greeted us after several hours of shovelling with an enthusiastic “Beautiful, eh...?!” I can imagine that there were even less accidents than usual because so few cars were driving around here.
I loved it! And for the next blizzard I definitely like some snow goggles and snow shoes like all the bright people we met.

I am smiling as I write this letter and will smile on the 25th of January.
As I tell everyone. It is always better to smile than to frown. ...”
And as we tell everyone - he is so right!
Professor Dr. Brian P. Schmidt was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2011 “for the discovery of the accelerating expansion of the Universe through observations of distant supernovae”.

And here is another special smile for the Worlds Greatest Smile
Nobel Laureate Professor Dr. Edmond H. Fischer wrote us a wonderful message saying that he will support for the World’s Greatest Smile.
If you read some of the texts he wrote you’ll find that he has beautiful sense of humour.
Professor Fischer wrote us e-mails in two languages, and he speaks even more. He was born in Shanghai, China. His mother was born in France and his father was born in Austria. At age 7 he and his two older brothers were sent to a Swiss boarding school and in 1950 he went to the United States for post-doctoral research. If you know me a bit you might imagine that people who can say clever and even funny things in more than one language have a special place in my heart and if a Nobel Laureate Professor Dr. Edmond H. Fischer signs his e-mails to me with “Eddy”€¯ my heart has to melt even if it’s -13°C outside right now...
The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1992 was awarded to Professor Dr. Edmond H. Fischer for his “discoveries concerning reversible protein phosphorylation as a biological regulatory mechanism”€¯.
