Someone just earned some extra milk and cookies...!

Since I have an especially loving relationship with Santa I expected me to put him (or one of Santa’s helpers) on our unofficial list of heroes at some point.
But who would have thought that I would put Santa (or one of Santa’s helpers) on our heroes list for denying presents to someone? Oh well, I did...

Here is what Santa (or one of Santa’s helpers) answered when asked by children for a gun:
“You might get a gun from your father or your mother or grandfather, but you won’t get one from me,” he tells kids who request weapons, either real or make-believe, at the Fairfax County nursery. “Guns were put on this earth to take the life of a bird, an animal or a person. Guns were  designed to make people cry, to make people die. Now, take a candy and a holy card.””€ť The Washington Post

Brilliant! Well done, Santa!
And if you’d ask me you could deny them to adults, too!

Happy Human Rights Day 2012!

Dear Human Rights,

Wishing you supporters with determination, a strong voice and a good common sense for your upcoming year of life

Love, Meike

“This year, the spotlight is on the rights of all people - women, youth, minorities, persons with disabilities, indigenous people, the  poor and marginalized - to make their voices heard in public life and be included in political decision-making.
These human rights - the rights to freedom of opinion and expression, to peaceful assembly and association, and to take part in government (articles 19, 20 and 21 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights) have been at the centre of the historic changes in the Arab world over the past two years, in which millions have taken to the streets to demand change. In other parts of the world, the ”99%” made their voices heard through the global Occupy movement protesting economic, political  and social inequality.” UN, My Voice Counts

Meet... us...

We had an online ”Meet the Artist” event - yes, we were the artists - again. It was so much fun! And people went right into shopping frenzy and were happily buying tons of our pictures, sculptures and stuff...!
It was crazy – we loved it!

Do-it-yourself-enlightenment

I don't buy a lot – don't know why, other things just make me happier I guess.

And now I bought... tadah... a flashlight...! Not just any flashlight but a Dynamo Flashlight with a fancy hand crank to wind it up.

So now I feel much saver in cases of emergency or if I would get lost in the woods in the dark again. (Yes, it happened before, Sachsenwald - forest near Hamburg, pitch-black night, wild boars, lots of fun... one of my best birthdays ever...)

And as a matter of fact we had a power outage just one day after my fabulous purchase – for about half a second in broad daylight. But iiif it would have been longer... and iiif it would have happened in the middle of the night... and iiif we would have already used all our emergency candles... and iiif I would have had to go somewhere very urgently... it would already have saved my life
I count that a successful acquisition!

Today is International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

Despite the fact that the right of women and girls to live free of violence is inalienable and fundamental - and enshrined in international human rights and humanitarian law - violence against women and girls is widespread throughout the globe and takes many forms.

On December 17, 1999, the United Nations General Assembly designated 25  November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence  against Women. The UN invited governments, international organisations  and NGOs to organise activities designed to raise public awareness of the problem on this day.

Today is World Toilet Day

“Every day, 7,500 people die due to a lack of sanitation, 5,000 of whom are less than 5 years old. Every year, 272 million schooldays are missed due to water-borne or sanitation-related diseases,”  said the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human right to safe drinking water and sanitation, Catarina de Albuquerque, on World Toilet Day.
One out of three people do not have access to improved sanitation facilities.

New experiment successfully survived

Since I'm still on my journey trough the gustatory side of the universe a sign
at the harbour caught my attention. Eating rose hips? Actually I prefer not to
eat anybody's hips... but the rose probably doesn't mind if I try. So...
After my curiosity led me to some more challenging food experiments I prepared
for the worst. And to my big surprise rose hips taste – tadah – delicious! I
seriously love them!

Only 364 days until Nocturne 2013...!

We went to last night's Nocturne, Halifax' biggest annual art event of the year - 20.000 visitors, more than 80 art projects!
One of my favourite discoveries of the night was the Morris house project, the historic Charles Morris building transformed into a hot air balloon. And even if I missed the 200 rabbits (how could that happen?) I had a lot of fun playing with the awesome big biomechanic animal robots!
Looking already forward to Nocturne 2013!

I love picking berries...

...mostly because of one simple reason - it is so relaxing...! And there were a lot of berries during the last weeks. Even tried berries in a “cream of mushroom and blackberry experiment”.

And even if I have to say that it didn't really taste that well it was much better than expected - and for sure better than it looked...!

And yes, it definitely was much better than some other experiments... ;)

Ok, I have been brave for a couple of years now, eating only whole wheat and sugar only in inevitable cases like bread - no candy, no sugar in yoghurt, no sugar-lemonade... Didn't even fall for the “Yummy-Land” aisle in Iceland.

And now I am stuck in the sweet aisles since a couple of days. And... um... I'm talking of sprinkled doughnut for breakfast and chocolate muffins for dinner and a some cookies between...!

I think I'll give me two weeks of sweet rapture and then return to sanity.
